Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions we hear most. When a question is really about how iOS works rather than Theme Studio, we say so, since that is usually what you are actually asking.
Why did my icon colors change on my Home Screen?
If your Home Screen icons are set to Dark or Tinted, iOS adjusts custom icons automatically. Backgrounds often come out darker or greyer than the image you saved, so a brown background can land looking grey.
This is how iOS handles any icon that does not ship its own dark version. Icons you apply through the Shortcuts app cannot provide one, so iOS generates the dark look itself. It affects every icon customization app the same way, and there is currently no way for an app to turn it off.
What you can do:
- Touch and hold an empty spot on your Home Screen, tap Edit, then tap Customize. Choosing Light keeps your icons looking the way you designed them.
- If you prefer the Dark setting, darker icon designs tend to hold up better, since there is less for iOS to darken.
Why do my icons have a glossy or embossed edge?
That comes from iOS itself. Current versions apply a glass style to every Home Screen icon, including custom ones, so a subtle highlight and edge are added on top of your artwork.
It is applied by the system after your icon is placed, so it is not part of the PNG you exported and it cannot be removed from inside Theme Studio. If Apple adds a setting for it, or moves away from the glass look, custom icons will follow automatically.
My baked backgrounds do not line up with my wallpaper
Baked backgrounds are cut from your wallpaper at exact Home Screen positions, so a few things have to match:
- Use the same wallpaper you baked from. Any change to the wallpaper, including moving or zooming it, shifts the alignment.
- If you baked from a screenshot, take it on the same device, in the same orientation, with the same page layout.
- On iPad, check the icon size question in the export step. iPad offers Default and Large icons, and the two use different grids. Note that iPad can show icon labels with both sizes, so pick by size, not by whether you see labels.
- On iPad, a page with a widget on it spaces icons differently than a page without one. Pick the matching layout before you bake.
Can I use my own images as icons?
Yes. In the Icons tab, open Browse and choose Custom to import your own image. You can remove the background and style it like any other icon. Saving custom icons is a Theme Studio Pro feature.
How do I put icons on my Home Screen?
Export your icons to Photos, then add each one through Apple's Shortcuts app. The full walkthrough with video is on the Getting Started page.
I bought Pro but it is not showing up
Open Settings in Theme Studio and tap Restore Purchases. Make sure you are signed in with the same Apple Account you purchased with. Purchases are tied to your Apple Account, so they carry across your devices.
How do I request an icon?
Use the icon request page. It is also linked from the Icons tab and from Settings.
Is Theme Studio available in my language?
Yes, in English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Polish, Turkish and Arabic. The app follows your iPhone's language automatically. In Arabic, everything mirrors from right to left, including the Home Screen layouts in Studio.
Can I change Theme Studio's own app icon?
Yes. Go to Settings > App Icon and pick Classic, Boho or Pink. All three are free.
